The Powell River Kings showed why they are a top 2 team in the Coastal Conference in a 5-0 win over the Langley Rivermen on Friday night. The Kings definitely did not look like a struggling road team as they played typical Kings hockey playing well defensively and were opportunistic when they had chances all night long.
In the first period, Jon Jutzi scored a power play goal right away before the 3 minute mark to open up the scoring on a long shot from the point that beat Jim Kruger. There was no scoring after that as the first frame ended with the Kings up 1-0. The second period was much like the first period except this time around Powell River scored in the late stages of the period with just 20 seconds left as Teegan Waugh scored on a scramble in front of the Langley net. Jamie Phillips made save after save as the Rivermen had a few golden scoring opportunities but could not cash in. The Kings really opened up the game in the last period of play when Forbes, Adair, and Shinkaruk scored all in a row to put the game on ice.
The Rivermen on the power play went 0/5, while the Kings scored once out of four opportunities. Jamie Phillips picked up his 4th shutout on the season and 14th win and stopped all 27 shots, meanwhile at the other end Jim Kruger lost his 12th game of the year facing 36 shots on the night. The Langley Rivermen will have no time to dwell on this loss as they get right back at it Saturday night against the Prince George Spruce Kings. It will be the last game before the Christmas break and it is a special event with it being the Teddy Bear Toss Night at the Langley Events Centre.
