Sutliffe’s big weekend earns player of the week honour

Sutliffe has been red hot as he is currently on a 6 game point streak

Official press release from the BCHL website:

Langley Rivemen forward Derek Sutliffe has been named the Gongshow BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 6, the league announced Monday.

Sutliffe led the Rivermen to a pair of wins and scored the overtime game-winner and a 1st Star nod in a 4-3 victory over the Cowichan Valley Capitals. The previous night, the Las Vegas product assisted on the game-winning goal plus one other in a 6-3 Langley win over division rival Chilliwack.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound forward’s contribution helped the Rivermen leapfrog the Coquitlam Express in the Mainland Division standings and into the final playoff spot.

Honourable mentions this week go to:

Surrey Eagles F Brady Shaw (4G, GWG, 1st Star, 3rd Star)

Merritt Centennials F Derek Huisman (3G, 1st Star)

West Kelowna Warriors D Braxton Bilous (2G 1A, 1st Star)

West Kelowna Warriors F Shawn Hochhausen (4A, FortisBC Energy Player of the Game)

Nanaimo Clippers D Chris Rygus (2G, GWG)

My thoughts:

Derek has been playing his best hockey in a Rivermen uniform in the past three weeks or so. He has registered 2 points a game in the last four contests and is on a season high 6 game point streak putting up 11 points in that span. He has really formed fantastic chemistry on a line with Mitch McLain who has been playing equally as good. The team will need those two to continue to chip in the rest of the way in hopes of hanging on to a playoff spot.

Congratulations to Derek who is very deserving of this honour.
