It wasn’t the start to the first multi-game road trip the Langley Rivermen were looking for falling 4-2 Friday night to the Kings in Powell River.
After a scoreless first period, the Kings struck first at the 8:04 mark of the second period as Jarid Lukosevicius scored his fourth of the season beating Brock Crossthwaite. But the Rivermen answered back just over a minute later as Austin Azurdia scored his first of the season from Captain Mitch McLain. But the Kings restored their lead on the power play as reigning BCHL player of the week Kurt Keats notched his fourth. Powell River then went up by two with 90 seconds left in the second as Keats and JJ Coleshaw assisted on Stephen Hiff’s first.
Keats earned his third point of the night as the Kings took a 4-1 lead, assisting on Ryan Scarfo’s fifth at which point Crossthwaite was replaced by Steve Myland who was brought in because of James Barr’s injury. The former West Kelowna Warrior stopped all eight shots he faced in his first appearance with the Rivermen.
The Riv got back within two midway through the third as Azurdia got his second of the game from Darien Craighead and Kevan Kilistoff, but that’s as close as Langley would come dropping their first road game of the year in regulation and just their second game of the season without at least a single point.
Langley’s penalty kill was strong allowing just one Powell River power play goal on seven chances while the Riv went 0/8 with the man advantage. Langley out shot Powell River 29-27.
The good news for the Riv is they get right back at it Saturday night in Port Alberni to visit the still winless Bulldogs. Alberni sits last in the Island division at 0-7-1 while the Rivermen now sit third in the Mainland with a 3-2-0-1 record. Puck drop Saturday is set for 7:00pm at the Weyerhaeuser Arena.
