The Langley Rivermen have swapped blueliners with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks receiving Zach Urban in exchange for Mark Whiteley.
Both are 1993-born defencemen with plenty of BCHL experience. Urban captained the Victoria Grizzlies last season earning three goals and 20 assists along with 83 penalty minutes in 54 games. He also added four points in 10 playoff appearances. Urban also brings championship pedigree as a member of the 2011-2012 RBC Cup champion Penticton Vees, and so far through the current season, he has four assists in nine games.
To say Urban is well-traveled is a bit of an understatement as he is now suiting up for his sixth BCHL team after playing as an affiliate with both the Vernon Vipers and Powell River Kings while playing for the KIJHL’s Penticton Lakers in 2010-2011.
Along with his experience, Urban adds even more size to the Riv blueline coming in at 6’3″, 205 pounds. He’s seen as a solid defensive defenceman making the Riv’s own zone a more punishing place for opposing players to enter.
While Urban is a welcome addition, it’s always tough to see a local area product leave. Whiteley began playing for Langley as an affiliate in 2010-2011 and joined the roster full-time two years later putting up 30 points last season. The Surrey native has three points through eight games so far this year as Salmon Arm will likely look to him for an increase in scoring from their blueline.
Best of luck to Mark in the Shuswap and welcome Zach to Riv Nation!
