It was an excellent return to Trail for Lyndon Stanwood who made 32 saves for his first win in net for the Langley Rivermen.
Dressing in 70 games with the Smoke Eaters and with a Trail jersey still hanging in the Cominco souvenir shop, the 20-year old vet pitched a spectacular performance earning the game’s second star.
First star honours went to Darien Craighead who had two helpers including a beautiful feed from behind the goal line to Marcus Vela in the final minute of the second for his eighth of the season which turned out to be the game winner.
Both goalies were busy Friday night as Dustin Nikkel made 36 saves of his own.
For the second time in the last three games it was a nice homecoming for a member of the Rivermen, this time for Castlegar native Tanner Johnson.
The Riv didn’t score on the power play but used good zone time pressure on the man advantage leading to Jakob Reichert’s second period goal, his 11th on the season. The Riv’s league leading penalty kill got even better killing off all four Smoke Eaters power plays.
The Rivermen now have a three point cushion atop the Mainland division with a Prince George loss to Coquitlam. Friday night’s win makes it six in Langley’s last seven games with a shot at a third straight win taking on the Silverbacks in Salmon Arm Saturday.
